Adeniyi Fatima Adetoke is a Nigerian music journalist that started her career with NotJustOk. She works as a writer, content creator/producer and editor for the platform documenting stories shaping Afrobeats, entertainment and culture across Africa. Asides that, she is a freelance and contributing journalist for lifestyle, fashion and entertainment content. She is also the Editor-in-Chief and Head Storyteller for Toke Suave Blog. She was recently selected for the fifth cohort of the MTN Media Innovation Program, alongside twenty-four other successful candidates. This program is facilitated by the School of Media and Communication, Pan Atlantic University.
Here is what she has to say about education in Pan Atlantic University.
Q: What has your experience at Pan-Atlantic University been like so far?
My experience at the Pan Atlantic University has been so enlightening. The campus is really lovely. There are lots of well maintained green spaces, amazing buildings and classrooms that inspire productivity and creativity. During our tour of the school’s premises, I was amazed by how well equipped their laboratories and workshops were and how functional the classrooms were.
The university is a great place to study, especially for my current programme in media innovation. The academics and other tutors are very welcoming and knowledgeable in their respective fields and I feel a strong sense of community. I’ve been able to connect with other fellows through shared cultures, hobbies and interests. There is also a great rapport between students and lecturers. All the academics really care about our experience and are very receptive when I ask questions in class and guidance with assessments. The university also provides lots of opportunities for professional development. For instance, I’ve been able to work on my public speaking and networking skills because of my current program.
Q: What makes education at PAU different from traditional learning?
What stands out to me is that the learning goes beyond the slides, presentations and lectures. The programme brings together experienced professionals, industry leaders, and academics who share real-world experiences. Instead of simply learning concepts, we explore how those concepts apply to actual challenges and opportunities in the media industry. There is a lot of team work and collaboration. My teammates and I have built and designed real life products merely from brainstorming sessions.
Another aspect that stands out is the emphasis on innovation, collaboration, and problem-solving. We are constantly encouraged to think critically, challenge assumptions, and develop solutions to real industry problems.
Q: What is one lesson that has stayed with you since joining the fellowship?
Since joining the fellowship, I’d say I’ve been able to adapt and learn about how the media space is constantly evolving and how to stay relevant with the innovative approaches we have been taught. Also, I’m excited I joined the programme because I wanted to learn and explore new opportunities, and that curiosity has exposed me to ideas and viewpoints that have broadened my understanding of the media landscape. It has reminded me that some of the best opportunities for growth come when we step outside our comfort zones and remain willing to ask questions.
Q: What role does collaboration play in your experience at PAU?
I believe the most rewarding part of this experience is the collaboration. Having people from diverse media backgrounds created an opportunity for meaningful conversations, knowledge sharing and out-of-the-box ideas. Collaboration has also helped me improve my communication and teamwork skills. It has taught me how to contribute effectively within a team, provide constructive feedback, and appreciate the strengths that others bring to the table.
My primary team consists of Fisayo Fosudo ( A leading tech content creator), Samuel Oluwakoya Ipinlaye (Talented software engineer), Jayne Augoye (Editor Premium Times and Founder Fabmum NG) and myself. I also collaborated with other fellows in my cohort on several tasks. Through our collaborative work, we were able to build on our collective ideas and attempted providing solutions to existing problems in the media space. Every interaction with my fellows has been a tactful and impactful learning experience.
Q: Have there been any standout moments during the programme?
One of the highlights has been engaging directly with industry leaders who openly share their journeys, successes, and challenges. For example, learning about MTN’s growth and evolution over the years. Understanding both the successes and the obstacles the company faced offered a more realistic perspective on innovation, leadership, and business growth. These conversations helped bridge the gap between what I have known and what I know now, showing us how organisations navigate real-world challenges. These conversations provide valuable insights that probably cannot be found anywhere else.
Q: How has this experience impacted you personally?
I have always been intentional about my personal growth and career and this programme has encouraged me to be more intentional. It has strengthened my confidence, broadened my horizons, and reminded me of the value of lifelong learning and community. Most importantly, it has reinforced my passion for storytelling, communication, and creating meaningful impact through media. I leave every class feeling inspired, motivated, and eager to continue growing.
Q: What would you say to someone considering a programme like MTN-MIP at PAU?
I would encourage anyone considering the MTN Media Innovation Programme at Pan-Atlantic University to embrace the opportunity with an open mind and a willingness to learn. This is not just a programme that helps you develop professional skills; it is such an elating experience that challenges you to think differently, expand your network, and discover new opportunities for your career. Also, you could make life long friendships.
